One of two hatbands belonging to General Archibald Gracie, III who was killed December 2, 1864. One of the two (unknown which one) was given to Gen. Gracie by U.S. General Charles A. Heckman when his command surrendered to Gracie at Chaffin's Bluff [Chaffin's Farm]. "I will send in his [Gracie's] hat band. And a second hat band which the northern General Hackman [sic] gave to my father when his command surrendered to my father at Chafin's Bluff. I found this written in my mother's handwriting on a bit of paper in which the two hat bands were wrapped together. I regret to say that I do not know which hat band belonged to my father!,,," (donor letter) |
