Lt. James Ellett wore this belt while commanding Crenshaw Artillery during the Battle of Fredricksburg, December 15, 1862, at which time he was killed. Ellett was Clerk of Richmond's Circuit Court prior to the war. He had married Mary Hudson. He enlisted on March 14, 1862 at Richmond as a Lt. in Crenshaw Artillery. Ellett was listed as absent, sick during September through November 1862. He was killed in action on December 13, 1862, "standing next to Maj. Pegram . . . by an explosion of an enemy shell." Ellett's funeral was held at his father's home on Gross Street and he was buried in Hollywood Cemetery. After the war, his brother Thomas married James' widow. |
