Non-regulation rifle cartridge box: black leather with double flaps and implement pouch, closure tab sewn to outer flap; brass finial; two divided tin inserts; horizontal and vertical loops on rear, vertical loops sewn; two japanned roller buckles sewn to bottom; large brass plaque attached to out flap: "J. W. Willeroy / Co. K. 4th Virginia Batl'n / Light Infantry Vols. / Rode's Brigade, Jackson's Corps / Army Northern Virginia, C. S. A. / This cartridge box was the means of / saving my life in the Battle of /Seven Pines in front of Richmond, VA, / May 31, 1862." Bullet hole through top flap, passing through inner flap, and badly damaging tin insert. |

Mr. J. W. Willeroy's company was part of Rode's Brigade, Jackson's Corps, and he carried this cartridge box when engaged in the Battle of Seven Pines, May 1862. According to a plaque on the cartridge box (likely postwar), this cartridge box saved his life in that battle. |
