The Stonewall Brigade medal was designed and executed in Paris in 1863. Col. C. A. L. Lamar ordered the medals for distribution to survivors of the Stonewall Brigade while in Paris on state business for Georgia. Lamar was killed in battle prior to the medals' arrival to the C.S.A. The medals were run through the blockade at Wilmington, North Carolina and consigned to Mr. Antoine Poullain of Augusta, Georgia. They were stored in a cotton warehouse there until the Union troops entered the city. A few years later, Mr. Poullain shipped the remaining medals to Col. Lamar's widow in Savannah, where they were stored for thirty years. Mrs. C. A. L. Lamar discovered the medals and presented them to the Charter Chapter, UDC, Georgia Division to be disposed of for their benefit. Alvin C. Fry, a member of Co. L, 5th Virginia Infantry, owned this medal. |
