"One of the keys of Libby Prison brought home by Gen. Brown, last Union commandant." Gen. George W. Brown presented this jail key to the Cromwell Post of the G. A. R. (Grand Army of the Republic) at White Plains, New York, as one of the keys of Libby Prison. The key was displayed at the post until it disbanded. When the Cromwell Post disbanded, it returned the key to a descendant of Gen. Brown. This descendant in turn gave the key to Edwin C. Smith, Post County Commander of the American Legion. Mr. Smith gave the key to the donor, Bernard M. Snyder. |
