Description |
The badge is a rectangular length of white silk ribbon trimmed on the sides with a satin weave and trimmed on the bottom in black velvet. A woodcut engraving portrait of Jefferson Davis is printed in black in the center of the ribbon. "IN MEMORIAM / DECEMBER, 1889" is printed in black above the portrait. "OUR CHIEFTAIN / LOUISIANA DIVISION / VETERAN / CONFEDERATE STATES / CAVALRY / 1861 - 1865" is printed in black below the portrait. This badge is associated with two others (70.2 & 70.3) that were together with a label stating, "Some Badges Sent to Mrs. Jefferson Davis." |

This badge was worn by a member of the Louisiana Division of Confederate Veterans, a former member of a Cavalry unit, as a memoriam for Jefferson Davis upon his death on December 6, 1889 in New Orleans. He was buried originally in Metairie Cemetery but re-interred at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia on May 31, 1893. A note attached to the three badges (TBMRs -70.1, 70.2, 70.3) states, "Some Badges Sent to Mrs. Jefferson Davis." |
