Description |
One of a pair of suspenders. Has colorful cotton webbing in stripes of tan, brown, beige, orange, and yellow/green on front, no orange shows on back. It has a brass buckle with tin teeth, and a subtle scrollwork edge is stamped into the brass. Twill tape binding on both ends and hand-bound button holes. |

Provenance |
Suspender belonged to Private John C. Speck. A courier for General Robert E. Lee, he was also a member of Company C, 39th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry. A student at the beginning of the war, he enlisted on November 1, 1863, in Orange Court House, Virginia; and died of disease at Richmond hospital on June 30, 1864. |
