Description |
Single breasted, 6 button front, greenish-gray wool and cotton cloth with no facings, piping, insignia or braid, light brown osnaburg lining in body and sleeves, Maryland state buttons with backmark: "SCOUVILL MF'G. CO./WATERBURY." |
Owned |
William Edward Tucker |
Made |
Charlotte, North Carolina (tentative) |
Provenance |
Identical to the jacket in another collection that had been issued to a soldier in the 2nd Maryland Battalion in early 1865, both uniforms probably came from North Carolina stores and were made at the state depot in Charlotte, where Tucker worked. Tucker's was probably an extra from the uniforms made for the Maryland soldiers. It is a benchmark piece that documents several other North Carolina jackets of identical construction and materials, except the buttons. According to donation records, Tucker wore this military jacket when he volunteered to guard the wagons containing the Confederate treasury in April-May1865. He is also said to have worn it when Mr. Jefferson Davis was captured. |
