The souvenir consists of a lock of hair wrapped in ruled paper, written on the outside, "Lock of Hair of Gen. R. E. Lee." This lock of Lee's hair is associated with another such lock in blue paper (.1200). |

This lock of Lee's hair was found in a little book taken from "Arlington," Lee's home, by Clarence A. Warner of Co. D, 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. Warner's unit was quartered at "Arlington" in 1862. He kept the book and cherished it for 65 years. Just before Warner's death, he gave it to Mrs. A. P. Chute with the request that it be returned to the Lee family. |
