Corporal Daves carried this flag with him during his almost two years of service in France in World War I. It is supposed to be one of the first of its type to reach France, the other being carried by a medical unit from Tennessee. "This flag was given by a friend of mine [Mrs. Daves] to her son, who had enlisted in the U. S. service during the World War, and went overseas. He wore this flag next to his heart, all the time he was in the service…." (donation letter) |
