Flag of the 28th Virginia Infantry. Issued to the unit in November 1861 and believed carried until June 1863. Carried during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, July 1863. The color bearer was shot and the flag was caught as it fell by Robert Allen, colonel of the regiment, who was also killed. Col. William G. Wingfield then carried the flag on. The flag was sent to the widow of Col. Robert C. Allen, whose body was never identified. It remained in the family of Col. Allen until donated. |
