Thomas R. Pollard made this stiletto from a beef bone while at home on furlough. He made the stiletto for his sister, Mrs. Sallie Rives Daniel. "A stilleto, that my mother used in doing her fine hand embroidery - her use of it begun during the Civil War, but she used it as long as she lived. She was Miss Sallie Rives Daniel, and her husband served all four years of the war. The stiletto was whittled out of a beef bone from the kitchen of my great uncle Thomas P. Pollard, whose picture you already have. He was home on furlough when he made the stiletto, but was afterward killed in the battle of the Crater…." |
