Battle of Chancellorsville |
Provenance |
Battle flag of an unidentified Confederate regiment, thought to have been captured at the Battle of Chancellorsville. According to the donor, this is the flag of the 53rd Virginia Infantry, which was captured at Chancellorsville by the 7th New Jersey Volunteers, of which Joseph Warren Revere had originally been Colonel (he was Brigadier General by the time of the Battle of Chancellorsville). However, the 53rd Virginia Infantry did not participate in the Battle of Chancellorsville. If this flag were captured in that battle, it would have belonged to a different Confederate regiment. |
