Minor wore the blue jacket and vest [0985.13.573] while serving as a flag lieutenant of CSS Virginia (Merrimac) at the battle of Hampton Roads, Virginia, March 8, 1862. He was wearing the jacket when he was wounded by small arms fire while preparing to accept the surrender of the USS Congress. Note accompanying jacket: "Struck here by a fragment of shell from the USS Cumberland" "The snag on the left breast is evidence of a wound caused by the explosion of a shell from the Cumberland. The dark garments were loaned in battle being less conspicuous than the Confederate gray." - donor letter. |
