Provenance |
J. Tyler Jobson used this Remington rifle during the war. Jobson's unit was the Portsmouth Rifles, Co. G, 9th Virginia Infantry. The 9th Virginia Infantry was part of Pickett's Division and Armistead' Brigade. He fought with the unit at Gettysburg in 1863. He lost his weapon when he was wounded on the battlefield at Seven Pines on May 31, 1862. His name and unit were carved into the rifle. Michael Daly, Co. F, 69th Infantry Irish Brigade, New York State Volunteers picked up the rifle from the battlefield and kept it. In March 1886, Daly wrote a letter to the Mayor of Portsmouth, Virginia, seeking information on Jobson's family, as he presumed Jobson had been killed in action and he wished to return the rifle. The major responded, informing Daly that Jobson was alive and providing his contact information. Daly subsequently returned the rifle to Jobson. [These two letters were published in newspapers in 1886; see 1954.028.00001] |
