U. S. Naval Officer's Sword, 1850-1865: slightly curved, single-edged quill back blade etched with floral sprays, trident, torch, US eagle, anchor, mast with sails, and "United States Navy" "W.H./Horstmann & Co." "in New York", leather cushion; gilded brass half basket hilt cast with eagle atop fouled anchor, knuckle bow pierced for sword knot near eagle's head pommel which flows into backstrap and ferrule, shagreen wrapped grip with remains of twisted wire, hinged counter-guard, acorn quillon. Leather scabbard (.72b) with gilded brass mounts, stud for frog, two suspension rings, center mount engraved with fouled anchor, lower mount engraved with oak leaves. |
