Description |
One of two (2) side chairs with the following characteristics. Each is made of rosewood and has shield back, a crest with convex shell and foliage carving, scroll braces to seat, half rounds on rails, and baluster turned front legs with casters. Casters are only on the front legs. |

Provenance |
The pair of side chairs were used by Jefferson Davis and family while in residence at the Executive Mansion in Richmond, Virginia, 1861-1865. In April 1865, Capt. Thomas Welles removed the two chairs from the Mansion when General Halleck used it as his headquarters. Capt. Welles gave them to his father, Gideon Welles, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy. |
