Frock coat of Captain William Palfrey, of Co. A, 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery. Palfrey enlisted as a private in the 4th Company, Washington Artillery, and fought in the Battle of First Manassas in July 1861. He transferred to the 2nd Company, Washington Artillery, in April 1862. He was commissioned 2nd Lt. in the 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery in July 1863, promoted to 1st Lt., and surrendered at Vicksburg. After being exchanged, he served as captain on the staff of Gen. F. A. Shoup, Chief of Artillery under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, then on the staff of Gen. Arnold Elzey. He participated in the Atlanta Campaign, the Chattanooga Campaign, and the Franklin-Nashville Campaign. He surrendered at Atlanta, Georiga, on May 6, 1865. |
