Provenance |
Portrait bust of Honorable James Edward MacFarland of Petersburg, Virginia; done from life in Italy in 1853 by John Adams Jackson. Discoloration of the marble in the drapery is due to moisure, which occurred during the war when MacFarland "was abroad at the time, and his faithful slaves were so afraid something would happen to his property they packed the bust in a wooden box and buried it. The yellow spot was caused by the dampness from being underground so long." James Edward MacFarland of Petersburg, Virginia, was private secretary to James M. Mason during the war. After the "Trent Affair," he reached Southampton, then assumed post of Secretary of the Confederate States Commission in London; and in January 1864 was appointed by President Davis as Secretary of the Confederate Legation (although never formally recognized as such by the British). |
