Snaffle bit with leather bridle and reins attached. Rolled cheek pieces and reins; throat latch missing. Two buckles attached to each ring with rein attached to one and leather strap attached to the other. Round metal plate attached to leather strap with etched "x"'s around the inner circle. |

This the bridle of General Patrick Cleburne: "taken from the head of general Pat. (Cleburne's) horse when he and his rider lay dead in front of our works at Franklin, Tenn. on Dec. 17, 1864. The bridle was taken from the horse by one of my comrades...John Miller, who, as well as my self, was a member of the 20th Ohio Battery." (donor statement) |
