The jacket shows evidence of the wound that ended Gilmore's military service. Found in the pocket of the jacket was a photograph of Gilmore wearing it. Active in a Mobile, Alabama militia unit before the war, Gilmore enlisted in the 3rd Alabama Infantry. At the battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia, on July 1, 1862, Gilmore was wounded in the foot, leg, and right lung, and reported as mortally wounded. He survived but was discharged from service. |
