Box used to contain chess pieces made by the messmates of George B. Myers, a Lieutenant Colonel , 10th Mississippi Infantry, at Johnson's Island, Lake Erie, Ohio. The pieces were fashioned using a saw made from a pen knife. The names on the bottom of the chess men are those men who were in the same mess as Myers. After the war, the chess set and box were given to Myers, as he was the best player. |
