A button from the last uniform jacket worn by Sergeant Samuel S. Green of Light Field Artillery of the Army of Northern Virginia, acting at the time as First Gun Sergeant of Fry's Battery, which at the evacuation of Petersburg was stationed at Fort Clifton on the Appomattox River. Sgt. Green was a native of Culpeper County, Virginia, and volunteered in the Confederate Army in the 2nd Company of Richmond Howitzers at Yorktown, Virginia, on June 27, 1861. He was transferred in January 1863 to R. C. M. Page's Battery of Col. Thomas H. Carter's Artillery Batallion of 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, with which and with Fry's Battery he served until the surrender of Gen. Lee. |
