Provenance |
Flag of the 21st Virginia Infantry (tentative). Captured at the battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1863 by the 60th Regiment New York Infantry. Believed captured at Culp's Hill on July 2 (as mentioned in the O.R.). Identification based upon modern research by Greg Biggs; the 21st VA lost their First National flag at Chancellorsville and, as part of Ed Johnson's Division, they did not get ANV flags until after the Gettysburg Campaign was over - late August/early September 1863. So they used this company flag as their regimental banner at Gettysburg. "Confederate Flag, stars & bars, captured at the Battle of Gettysburg Pennsylvania, July 2nd, 1863 by 60th Regiment New York Volunteers, 3rd Brigade 2nd Division 12th Army Corps Inscribed: Dulce et Decorum ist pro patrin man, on one side, A Crown for the Brave, on the other side" (from "Record of Rebel Flags Captured by Union Troops After April 19, 1861", National Archives, RG 94) |
