Pattern: First National flag; silk. Obverse: Embroidered presentation history inscription and unit designation. Motto in gold embroidery, "our liberty, our rights, our honor". Reverse: Currently undecorated, but prior evidence of 11 stars. Conserved. Stars: Evidence of 11 on reverse. None on obverse. Border: 1 3/4 inches silk fringe on fly end. Attachment: Sleeve. Unit Designation: "Mountain Rangers" is embroidered. Battle Honors: None. Stitching: Hand-stitched. |

Flag of the 7th Virginia Cavalry, Co. A, "Mountain Rangers" (also Headquarters, Turner Ashby). Made and presented to the unit by the Ladies of Salem in Faquier County, Virginia, and later used by Gen. Turner Ashby as his headquarters flag until his death, June 1862. According to an account by Ada W. Bacot, Ashby's "old company of Cavelry came down from Staunton this morning [June 8, 1862] about eleven oclock bringing their flag to attend at his burryal. I heard that one of them said as he covered the body of his chief with the flag, 'he fought with him under this flag, yes said the young friend, & under it we will avenge his death.' " It is unknown if the flag referred to is this one, or some other flag. |
