Miniature flag. Made by Amanda Stone Bowen of Hannibal, Missouri in April 1861. Said to have been concealed in her clothing during repeated searches of her home by Federal authorities. "A small silk flag made by Miss Amanda Stone Bowen (Matson) the day Fort Sumter was evacuated -- April 14, 1861. Her home was searched five times for the flag, but she being a Confederate mail carrier, considered it her loyal duty to keep it with her, consequently she wore it on her person all the time, which accounts for the loss of the stars. She was arrested and banished on account of her loyalty and love for this flag." (accession ledger entry) |
