The sculpture was based on the death mask made by Frederick Volck on May 11, 1863, when Lt. Gen. Jackson's body was in the Virginia Executive Mansion (previous said to be in the Virginia State Capitol). Jefferson Davis owned the bust and placed it on the mantel of the Executive Mansion state dining room. It was there when Union General Godfrey Weitzel occupied the Mansion on April 3, 1865. Gen. Weitzel presented the bust on April 4, 1865 to Maj. Devens of Massachusetts. Maj. Devens then gave the bust to Brevet Lt. Col. George A. Bruce, U. S. Volunteers. Forty years from the date of its removal (on April 4, 1905), Bruce presented the bust to the CMLS. Volck was granted design patent 193 for the bust on August 25, 1863. This was the only Confederate patent ever granted to a citizen of a foreign state. |
