Description |
The powder flask consists of tin, enameled in dark red-brown. It has a screw top, brass rings on either side, an oval brass plate, and a paper label. The brass plate is stamped, "Hazard Powder Co / Hazardsville / Conn." The paper label reads, "Hazards / Kentucky Rifle Gun Powder." Empty, or nearly so. Marked in white paint, "33". This flask is associated with another, identical to it (.1253). |

The two powder flasks were used during the war. J. W. Davies raised a company of sharpshooters detailed to special duty along the James River. Mrs. William W. Davies donated the items in memory of her husband, the owner's son, who had been a messenger for President Davis during the war |
