The patchwork quilt was made as a Confederate commemorative quilt in 1887. It was also a friendship quilt, each square having been worked by a different person. A photograph of various Confederate leaders is printed on the white silk in the center of each square. It belonged to Mrs. Marie Middleton Davies. She and her husband, W. W. Davies, in whose memory the quilt was given, ran the Lee Galleries, a photographic studio, in Richmond, Virginia. The photographs are identified as follows (from left to right): Row 1: A.P Hill; Thomas J. Jackson; Jefferson Davis; JEB Stuart; Jefferson Davis.
