Description |
Top: "Eight-Pointed Star" on the inside, "Double Sawtooth" on each side (16 devices). Materials are white diamond-print cotton percale. Interlining: Cotton. Backing: White cotton shirting from New England mill shirting fabric, ca. 1880 (red stripes on fabric may indicate coming to end of fabric roll). Handwritten in one corner is "M.G.A."; handwritten in opposite corner is "RLB". Binding: White cotton. Stitching: Hand, with exception of binding, which is machine. |

This quilt was made from a percale dress worn by Isabella Neeson Woods of Philippi, (West) Virginia. Her husband, Samuel Woods, paid $100.00 for the material in 1862; he signed the Virginia Ordinance of Secession. According to the donor, the material was originally brown and tan. The dress was later made into this quilt to preserve it, ca. 1880. According to an 2/19/1862 letter, Mrs. Woods lost "twelve dresses and dress patterns' to a fire while they were stored in an attic with other valuables. It is possible, though unknown, that the fabric was purchased to make a replacement dress. (see p. 66 of "Samuel Woods and His Family" in file) |
