Brass key taken from the wreck of the Confederate ironclad gunboat CSS Chicora, after it was sunk about 4,800 feet south of the Cooper River Bridge in Charleston Harbor when US General Sherman occupied the city. The engine in this boat was taken out in the 1870s and is said to have been used at Pregnall's Shipyard later on. The wreck was dredged in 1929 and the key was removed from the it at that time by the authority of Henry F. Rivers, assistant Engineer, US Engineers, Charleston, South Carolina. |
