U.S. Model 1850 cap pouch: black leather with double flap; remains of sheepskin lining; stamped on inner flap, "L. S. _____, NEW YORK," brass finial; two belt loops secured to back with copper rivets. Attached to belt (1085) with Federal eagle plate1085a), and brown leather holster (1085b). |

Richard Brooke Gwathmey captured the belt, buckle, holster, and cap box from Major Hall of the U. S. Army and used them until he was killed at the Battle of Ream's Station in August 1864. Gwathmey was a member of Co. H, 9th Virginia Cavalry. Newspaper notices accompanied the gift, speaking in glowing terms of his bravery and many virtues. |
