Description |
Pattern: First National flag; silk. Oil-painted central seal in canton. Seal painted by Norfolk, Virginia, artist, Bonneau. Obverse: Virginia state motto, "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS"; unit designation; presentation history inscription in gold paint. Reverse: eleven stars; motto in gold paint, "Our God, Our Country, Our Homes". Stars: Eleven gold painted, 5-pointed (reverse). Border: 2 1/2 inches gold metallic fringe on 3 sides. Attachment: Ties. Unit Designation: "MARION RANGERS" in gold paint on obverse. Battle Honors: None. |

Flag of the 16th Virginia Infantry, Co. A, "Marion Rangers". Miss Catherine Whitehead assisted in securing the materials; Mrs. General R. Wright of Georgia gave the fringe; and an artist of note painted the design. Mrs. Danna Webb Upshur presented it to the unit on behalf of the Ladies of Suffolk, Virginia. It was used under Captain (later Lieutenant Colonel) Richard O. Whitehead, until it went into active service, July 1861. |
