Description |
Badge: The lapel pin is a square piece of white paper with red, blue and white markings. An Army of Northern Virginia pattern flag is printed over the whole area of the pin. The background is red; the stars are printed blue on a white cross. Each of the quadrants formed by the cross have white lettering. "JACKSON" is printed in the top quadrant; "MONUMENT" is printed in the left; "DAY" is printed in the right; and "MAY 1st. 1914" is printed in the bottom. The manufacturer's information is printed in black at the bottom of the reverse of the pin, "PAT. MAY 16, 1905 / BASTIAN BROS CO., ROCHESTER, N. Y." The pin-hole is torn. |

The Jackson Monument Day lapel pin belonged to Emilius Allen Baughman. He enlisted in Co. C, 38th Bn. Virginia Light Artillery, "Hampden Artillery," on May 1, 1863 as a Pvt. The rolls show him as present through January 1865. After the war, Baughman was a member of the R. E. Lee Camp, No. 1, United Confederate Veterans. His obituary appeared in June 8, 1915 "Richmond Times-Dispatch." No history was provided with the item, but research reveals that Jackson Flag Day was indeed declared on May 1, 1914 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and/or the United Confederate Veterans, as a fundraiser for the Lt. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson Monument in Richmond, Virginia. The formal committee for the monument was formed in November 1914. The Cornerstone Laying ceremony was held at the 25th Annual Reunion of the United Confederate Veterans on June 1-3, 1915. The Unveiling Ceremony for the Jackson Equestrian Monument was held in 1919. The monument is located at what is now the intersection of Monument Avenue and the Boulevard. |
