Provenance |
Thomas W. Colley, who was a member of Co. D (2nd), 1st Virginia Cavalry, made the three buttons out of peach kernels. He was wounded multiple times during the war – lost the little finger of his left hand in 1861, shot through the stomach in 1863, and had his left foot amputated in 1864. He may have created these buttons to pass the time while recuperating. There is no history for the bullet, although it is probably the one that caused him to lose his foot or the one that passed through his stomach. "Confederate cuff buttons." |
