Pattern: Army of Northern Virginia battle flag; wool, cotton. Conserved. Stars: 13 white cotton, 5-pointed. Border: 2 inches white wool on 3 sides, 2 inches white cotton on hoist edge. Attachment: Eyelets. Unit Designation: "47 / VA." in yellow paint above/below center star. Battle Honors: In black paint; "SEVEN PINES.", "MECHANICSVILLE.", and "COLD HARBOR." in upper quadrant; "OX HILL.", "HARPER'S FERRY.", and "SHARPSBURG." in right quadrant; "SHEPHERDSTOWN.", "FREDERICKSBURG.", and "CHANCELLORSVILLE." in lower quadrant; "FRAZIER'S FARM.", "CEDAR RUN.", and "MANASSAS." in left quadrant. |

Flag of the 47th Virginia Infantry. Captured at the battle of Falling Waters, Maryland, July 14, 1863, on the retreat from Gettysburg by the 1st Michigan Cavalry. Research indicates that Sergeant Alphonso Chilson and Sergeant James R. Lyon were the captors. "Confederate Battle Flag captured at the Battle of Falling Waters Va July 14th 1863.
