Provenance |
This sword and scabbard was made for a governor of South Carolina. For an unstated reason, it was given to Brig. Gen. George Pierce Doles for his use. After his death in June 1864, the sword was sent to his widow, Sarah Williams Doles, in Milledgeville, Georgia. During Sherman's March to the Sea, she threw it down a well where it remained four months. After the war, she presented it to the Survivors' Association of the 4th Georgia Volunteers of the Doles-Cook Brigade. The Survivor's Association appointed Capt. Charles T. Furlow custodian, at first, and then later, owner, of the sword and scabbard. |
