Provenance |
Lithographic stone used to print Confederate twenty dollar notes. Manufactured and used along with a hand press in the museum's collection by Hoyer and Ludwig of RIchmond (1861-1863). Hoyer and Ludwig printed primarily bonds, money, and stamps for the Confederate Government. The unfinished Master lithograph stone of an 1861 Hoyer & Ludwig $20, known today as T18 (Type 18) is probably postwar (most authentic T18's were ground down and reused for later issues). This stone may have been part of the display showing the design, and was left unfinished on purpose as an example of how the stones were created; and/or, it was work in progress to make/print sourvenir notes using the lithographic press. Design is so basic it's difficult to make a determination as to authenticity. |
