Pattern 1851 U.S. eagle plate, brass; attached to a brown leather belt (.1085). The belt also has a holster (1085b) attached, cap box (1085c) is mounted to the belt, marked on the inner flap, "L. S. _____, NEW YORK," in an oval and has a brass finial closure. |

Richard Brooke Gwathmey captured the belt, buckle, holster, and cap box from Major Hall of the U. S. Army and used them until he was killed at the Battle of Ream's Station in August 1864. Gwathmey was a member of Co. H, 9th Virginia Cavalry. Newspaper notices accompanied the gift, speaking in glowing terms of his bravery and many virtues. |
