Provenance |
Brig. Gen. Robert Daniel Johnston carried this coin purse during the war. He had it in his pocket when he was badly wounded (at either: Gettysburg, in the jaw, neck, and collarbone; Spotsylvania Court House, in the head; or Seven Pines, in the arm, face, and neck). Silver coins in the purse probably saved his life since a bullet entered the purse and buried itself in the coins. |
