Description |
The badge consists of a length of white silk ribbon with multi-color markings and gold thread fringe at the bottom. A celluloid covered paper flag in a Third National pattern and staff are a stick pin for two short lengths of silk ribbon (no longer attached to the longerwhite one), one blue and one white. "PHILADELPHIA" is printed in black across the length of the blue ribbon. "RICHMOND" is printed in red across the length of the white ribbon. Crossed flags are printed in red and blue on the longer white silk ribbon. An Army of Northern Virginia pattern flag is on the left; a Virginia State flag is printed on the right. "Aide-de-Camp." is printed in blue above the flags. "GRAND CAMP / CONFEDERATE VETERANS / DEPARTMENT / OF / VIRGINIA" is printed in blue below the flags. The reverse of the flag stick pin has a white background and red lettering which reads, "WE ARE WAVING / THE 'FLAG' OVER / THE FURNITURE BUSINESS / IN DANVILLE, VA. / HODNET-CHISM FURNITURE CO. / 416 MAIN STREET." The maker of the flag pin has printed his name and address in red on the part of the flag that folds over the stick pin. The maker's information reads, "THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO., NEWARK, N. J. / PAT. JUNE 6, 1905." |

Alexander Jennings collected this badge worn by an Aide de Camp at a Grand Camp (reunion) held by the Virginia Division, [United] Confederate Veterans, held in Danville, Virginia, possibly in 1909. See previous Accession Number 988.38.4. The flag attached to the ribbons is a promotional item for a furniture store, Hodnet-Chism, at 416 Main Street in Danville. He was a Sergeant with Co. D, 15th Virginia Infantry. |
