Description |
Lantern: This lantern is made of tin, steel, and glass. It has an onion shaped globe with a conical tin top and cylindrical steel base. It has a fiber (probably yarn, perhaps not period) cord tied to the top. The top is pierced and has four radiating iron dowels which surrounds the globe and is attach to the base. A small glass bottle (.367a) with a tin cap and cotton wick fits inside the base and would have provided the fuel. |

This lantern with the original "onion" shade was used during the Civil War in a hospital on Main Street in Richmond, probably Robertson Hospital under the charge of Captain Sally L. Tompkins. |
