The colonel of a Union army unit tore a pair of curtains and one cornice from the windows of the Davis Mansion while his troops passed through Richmond. This colonel gave one curtain and half the cornice to Father Matthew O'Keefe of Norfolk, Virginia , who was Chaplain to this unit. Father O'Keefe later gave the lambrequins (made from the curtains) and half-cornice to Mrs. Elias Murphy of Portsmouth, Virginia. Her heirs gave them to the donor. [Reproduction fabric based on this pattern known as the "Brockenbrough Damask" and is used in the stairhalls and Waiting Room.] |
