Oil on canvas portrait painting of the subject wearing a dark civilian suit . The subject is sitting next to a window opening on his right through which can be seen a column fragment. The artist's signature is located on the lower right. General Anderson is in dark civilian suit, white shirt with dark corss-hatch design cravat. Pince-nez, watch fob, and chain and ring (on left hand's smallest finger) are visible on seated figure. |

The portrait is of Joseph Reid Anderson (1813-1892); he was the owner/operator of the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, Virginia during the war. Anderson was commissioned a Confederate Brig. Gen. but was ordered by Jefferson Davis to return to Tredegar. Painted after the war (possibly 1893) by William Garl Browne, Jr. |
