Inkstand left in the Treasury Department, C.S.A. at Abbeville, South Carolina. It was in the office of A.R. Venable, Assistant Quartermaster C.S.A. when the cabinet members moved farther South. "The Confederate Treasury occupied my office at Abbeville, S.C. after leaving Richmond when it became necessary to move South [in April 1865]. They left this ink stand with other things in my office. Pres. Davis and his cabinet moved on about the middle of the night, with the Treasury…. I have had the inkstand ever since." |
