"The cane is from the branch of the tree formally growing in the section in Lexington Cemetery wherein rested, until later removed, the remains of Gen'l Stonewall Jackson. The roots of this tree were found to be punctuating [sic] the grave of Gen'l Jackson and was ordered to be cut down (1881) and the party cutting it down carved Gen'l Jackson's history on this branch and then presented it to my brother-in-law Mr. Ed P. Dold, and [he] later about 1883 presented it to me." |
