Description |
The badge consists of a brass bar pin and a length of white satin ribbon with black, red, and blue markings. The brass bar pin is a U. S. Federal Eagle with outspread wings and chest shield grasping leaves and arrows in its claws. A metal hook is soldered to the bottom of the bar pin and holds a miniature nickel U. S. Army helmet. The helmet has a brass spike on top and front badge. A clasp pin is soldered on the back of the bar and holds a small fragment of hemp rope. A white satin ribbon hangs from the bar pin. Two crossed flags printed in red, blue, and black are on the upper half of the ribbon. An Army of Northern Virginia pattern flag is on the left while a Virginia State flag is on the right. A woodcut engraving image of the Robert E. Lee Equestrian Monument is printed in black line on the bottom half of the ribbon. The bottom edge of the ribbon is frayed. |

Provenance |
A handwritten pen and ink note on the back of the ribbon reads, "Souvenirs of the Lee unveiling - Part of rope used in hauling monument from R. R. Station to site. - Gift from Miss Anna R. Goodwin, Louisa, Va." The Gen. Robert E. Lee Monument was unveiled and dedicated on May 29, 1890. The statue came via train and arrived in Richmond at Main Street Station (now 15th & Main Streets). |
