Two bullets, button fragments, and one strand of hair. .58 caliber lead rifled musket bullet. Small fragment of a second bullet. One strand of human hair, formerly adhered to fragmentary second bullet. Numerous rusted and corroded pieces of metal, believed to be remnants of uniform buttons. |

Captain James Walter Wyatt was killed at the Battle of Cold Harbor in 1864 with this bullet in his spine. The fragmentary second bullet was embedded in his skull, and formerly had one hair adhered to it (now separated). According to the donor, 37 bullets killed him. The rusted buttons are remains from his uniform. Wyatt was buried four separate times (on the battlefield, in a nearby garden, to "Clifton," and finally Maplewood Cemetery in Charlottesville in 1926). The bullet and button fragments were removed from the final grave. (Details regarding burials in donor letter in file). |
