The black lacquer lap desk was brought through the blockade during the war. Henry B. Gaines purchased the desk for his wife, Addie Gaines. Henry B. Gaines was a Steward at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond. The donor also gave an account book for Chimborazo Hospital that he used, as well as three wartimes letters written by Lt. Edward Varnier (Co. C, 9th Virginia Cavalry) to Henry or Addie Gaines . |
