The badge was worn by the outpost commands on the left arm as a token of recognition, by special order (issued July 18, 1861) of General P. G. T. Beauregard, at the Battle of First Manassas. The badge was adopted by the Federals, and as a result, some Confederate soldiers went into battle with their badges around their necks. Washington Nelson Toler was the owner of this badge and a member of Co. K, 6th Virginia Cavalry, "Loudoun Cavalry."
